Mara Wilson, besides being a great writer and the childhood star of films like Matilda and Mrs. Doubtfire, is a Gilmore Girls superfan. So she’s a perfect guest to sit down with Scott Patterson on this episode of I Am All In to chat about the season one episode “Paris Is Burning.” Like Scott, Mara is happy to dig deep into character motivations, the quality of the dialogue and writing, and how much they both dislike Max Medina (she says, “He suffers from a terminal case of ‘not being Luke’”). They dissect story structure, plot points, and their favorite characters; reenact a scene together; and Scott discovers if Mara is on Team Dean, Team Logan, or Team Jess.
Fans of the podcast know that Scott has a very "Luke-esque" hatred of Max Medina; he even had to sit down with Scott Cohen for an entire episode just to find out what was going on with “the elbow touching” at one point. So when Mara admits that she’s not a fan of the character, Scott bursts out laughing and says, “You are on the right podcast!” However, Scott can tell how much Max loves and admires Lorelai, and he sympathizes with how hard it must be for Max to break things off with her, even though he knows it’s the right thing to do. Mara says it would never have worked between them because “he puts her on a pedestal, I think, and that’s dangerous,” because either they’ll fall or get uncomfortable with it. “With her and Luke, they are on equal footing. They respect each other and they trust each other, and on some level understand each other.”
But what Scott really saw throughout the episode was “Rory’s strength….being able to stand up to Paris in such a cool manner, and being able to stand up to her own mother. She’s a tough kid.” He and Mara compare season one Rory with the revival One Year In the Life, talking about how plenty of gifted young kids with a strong sense of self lose their way in their thirties. But could she have been steered wrong by a boyfriend, perhaps? Say….Logan, Mara’s least favorite of Rory’s suitors? Scott hates him too: “I didn’t trust him the minute he called her ‘ace.’ I said that’s not gonna work!” Plus, who Mara thinks the father of Rory’s baby is, a breakdown of all the pop culture references, and more on this great episode of I Am All In.
