Zach Braff is super impressed by Donald Faison’s dance moves in Scrubs episode “My Half-Acre;” his routine for Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison” has become a fan favorite moment and was even incorporated into the video game Fortnite. But as Donald explains on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends, he was far from prepared for that day of shooting. He breaks down why he had to improvise that day, and how some childhood fun creating dance routines with friends turned out to be great training. Plus, the Janitor also plays Find the Saltine, some throwaway punchlines have a lot more going on underneath the surface, and no one is sure what happened to the giant portrait of Zach and Mandy Moore riding a unicorn – but they’d like to.
Donald was newly divorced when this episode was shot, so the night before, he “was out at the clurbs trying to make it happen” and showed up late to work the next day, hungover, only to find the entire crew gathered in one location to watch his amazing dance routine. He’d had two weeks to put something together, and Zach says “it’s not an exaggeration” to assume that Rob Maschio spent the entire two weeks rehearsing and perfecting his own routine. But Donald had done nothing to prepare; he just knew the song was “Poison.” So he called to mind the times when he was young, and he and his friends would pretend to be members of Bell Biv DeVoe and come up with their own dance routines. He managed to bust out his iconic moves in a single take – and the rest is Scrubs history.
Zach and Donald both laugh a lot at J.D. giving Mandy Moore a key to his special wizard hat collection, but wonder if he’s allowing her to wear one of his own wizard hats or if he bought one for her specifically. “And they’ve commissioned a portrait. Where is all this disposable income coming from? I’m spending a fortune on this girl!” Zach laughs. The painting was around for a long time, but “eventually Mandy and I weren’t dating any longer, and I remember thinking, ‘What do you do with a giant portrait of you and your ex-girlfriend wearing wizard hats riding a giant unicorn?’” He’s not sure where it went after that. If anyone knows what happened to it, Zach would like to hear from them: “Mandy just had a baby. I’d like to send it to her as a ‘Congratulations on your baby’ present,’” he jokes.
