Multis start week with strong showing

CLOVIS, Calif. – With several multis athletes in the mix for points on Day 2 of the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, three found themselves collecting points for Fresno State. Since joining the conference, the Bulldogs have only seen one multis athlete score at championship meet.

Freshman Madison Hutton led the way by picking up five points for the women after pair of big personal bests to kick off her afternoon. On her second attempt in the long jump, her best event, the Surrey, England product registered a measurement of 6.06m/19-10.75, the first time she has eclipsed the six-meter mark. The jump ranks seventh all-time at Fresno State and placed her between fellow heptathletes Felicia Brown (6.08m) and Jestena Mattson (6.03m).

Hutton carried that momentum into the javelin where she entered with a best of 28.22m/125-5. She shattered that on her first attempt with a throw of 35.17m/117-2. She then finished the competition with a 2:23.44 to finish with 5,295 points. The total, a new PB moved the freshman up to fourth all-time at Fresno State.

While Hutton opened the day with a PR in the long jump, so did her teammates KJaja Bins (5.54m/18-2.25) and Kaitlynn Perez (5.37m/17-7.5). Those marks helped propel the sophomores Top-10 finishes and new personal bests. Bins finished eighth with 4,737 points, while Perez was 10th with 4,578 points. Both totals were more than 200-point improvements.

In the men's decathlon, Garrett Ostrinski moved up one spot over the final five events to finish with a new high of 6,670 points. His fifth-place finish was two spots better than 2021. The sophomore recorded two new PBs on the day with a 36.41m/119-5 in the discus and then closed the competition with a 4:40.53 in the 1500m which helped him move from sixth to fifth in the overall standings.

In his first-ever decathlon, Meinkaikay Kaye finished ninth overall with 5,416 points.
