'Dogs in fifth after strong start

MARICOPA, Ariz. — The Fresno State men's golf team came out strong at the Southern Dunes Collegiate, taking first place after the opening round with a 12-under 276. However, the Bulldogs ended the day in fifth place, posting an 8-over 296 in the second round at the 7,546-yard, Par 72 Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course.

Joseph Lloyd was the low Bulldog, finishing with a 5-under 139 to tie for seventh place in the field. His impressive first round included a 6-under 66 with eight birdies.

Jaden Hunter secured a spot in the Top 20, tying for 17th with a 1-under 143, while Mason Benbrook was close behind with an even-par 144. Ryan Firpo finished 4-over, and James Watney ended the day 15-over.

Competing as an individual, Chris Bettencourt had a phenomenal start to his collegiate career, finishing the day in second place with a 9-under 135.

The final round will start at 8 a.m. PT tomorrow.
