SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team won a thrilling series finale over the San Jose State Spartans on Sunday at Excite Ballpark.
With the Bulldogs comeback win, Fresno State is now 12-15 on the season and 5-4 in MW play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Similar to game two of the series, the starting pitchers for the Bulldogs and Spartans kept the game tight through the first six innings, now allowing a single run.
Fresno State was the first to break through the scoreless streak, scoring the first run of the game in the seventh inning. Griffen Sotomayor led off the inning by reaching first on a throwing error by the Spartan shortstop, followed by a single from Owen Faust. Bobby Blandford executed a successful sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, and Sky Collins drove in Sotomayor for the first run of the game.
The Spartans quickly responded with a three-hit inning and scored two runs to take the lead.
With their backs against the wall, Fresno State was down to their last strike of the game in the top of the ninth inning when Collins hit a single through the left side and quickly stole second. Jett Ruby pinch hit and sparked a Bulldog rally with a single to score Collins and tie the game.
The next pair of Bulldog batters walked to load the bases in Cayden Munster and Eddie Saldivar. Justin Stransky drove in two runs with a single through the left side, putting the Bulldogs on top, 4-2.
JT Guerrero came in to close the bottom of the ninth, retiring a pair of batters to earn his fourth save of the season.
NOTES
At 6.2 innings pitched, Kaleb Hay was just one out shy of a career high in IP.
After earning the loss in game two, JT Guerrero closed game three and earned his fourth save of the season.
Jett Ruby recorded his first career RBI.
