COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Following a record-breaking weekend, Cierra Jackson was named Mountain West Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
On Saturday, the Fresno State senior set the program's discus record on her second attempt (63.66m/208-10), and surpassed that mark on her third attempt (64.42m/211-4). The 36-year-old record of 62.20m/204-1 was previously held by three-time U.S. Champion and Olympian Lacy Barnes.
Jackson's new personal best of 64.42/211-4 puts her No. 12 on the NCAA all-time collegiate list while both of her top two marks in the meet are among the Top 50 throws in NCAA history. This comes after entering the weekend with just two throws over 60 meters in her career.
Jackson's mark currently ranks No. 2 in the NCAA this season and is No. 2 in Mountain West history.
On Friday, Jackson also won the hammer on a toss that measured 65.89m/216-2. The mark moved her from No. 7 to No. 3 all-time at Fresno State in the event, and sits less than a meter behind the record. The throw ranks No. 6 in the NCAA this season and No. 4 in Mountain West history.
